Can a social worker become a counselor in Michigan?

The requirements for social workers vary from requirements of counselor. You can become a social worker with a bachelor’s degree, but for a counselor you will need to complete a master’s degree. But, you can change your profile and become a counselor if you want.

Steps to become a Counselor

To obtain a license you should apply to the Michigan Board of Counseling.

  • Firstly, you should meet the education requirements. You should have at least a master’s degree. The program you are going to enroll should be accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) or the National Council on Rehabilitation Education (NCRE). Your program should also include 600-hours of supervised clinical internship.
  • Secondly, when you complete your degree apply for the Limited Professional Counselor license and complete the supervised practice. If you already have a master’s degree you should earn 3.000 hours of practice during the 2 years. 100 of these hours should be completed under the supervision of a licensed profession.
  • Thirdly, pass either the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) exam or Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification Exam.
  • After that, you can fill the form, attach all the required documents and submit to the Board.

Steps to become a Social Worker

For your social worker license you should apply to the Michigan Board of Social Work.

  • Firstly, you should choose what kind of license you need: Registered Social Service Technician, Licensed Bachelor’s Social worker or Licensed Master’s Social worker.
  • Secondly, according to your choice and education you can apply for your license to the Board.

For your RSST license, you should complete 2 years of college education, apply for the LSST license. Board will send you the instructions on how to complete a background check. And, gain 2.000 hours of supervised experience.

For the LBSW license, firstly, you will need to obtain a LLBSW license. Board will send you the instructions on how to complete a background check. And, complete 4.000 hours of supervised social work experience, and pass the ASWB bachelor’s exam.

For the LMSW license, firstly you should apply for the LLMSW license and complete a background check. After that, complete 4.000 hours of supervised social work experience and pass the ASWB licensing exam.

Can you be a social worker without a degree in Michigan?
